Curcumin is a pigment found in turmeric that gives it its golden colour. As a component of standard turmeric root, curcumin’s concentration averages around 2-8 percent. The amount of curcumin in turmeric is thought to be the main contributor to the spice’s benefits.
Curcumin is a fat-soluble compound and, like other fat-soluble nutrients, needs to go through a number of steps prior to its absorption. Most notably, the formation of micelles that serve to encapsulate fat-soluble compounds enabling them to be transported through the water-based environment of the gut.
Solgar® Full Spectrum Curcumin contains biomimetic micelles, meaning they mimic micelles created naturally during the digestive and absorptive processes. They are also fully soluble in water and small enough to support delivery of curcumin to the intestinal wall. There, the micelles break apart facilitating efficient absorption of curcumin.
Research shows that the micellised form of curcumin significantly increases its absorption rate and bioavailability as compared to other forms of curcumin.^1,2 It stays in the body longer too.
